Movie Review: Just say anything

Lloyd Dobler (played by John Cusack) is a kick boxer with little ambition. One of John Cusack early movies! He looks extremely adorable and ravishing in the character of Lloyd Dobler. He is simple, cute, down to earth and noble. He wants to go out with the very intelligent Diane court and musters courage to ask her out in spite of his friends Corey and DC telling him that "brains stick with brains." Interestingly Diane says yes to him (giving hope to all those viewers who have been wanting to ask out their lady love interest ;0) and when people at the party who could never expect that Diane will come with Lloyd leave apart the fact that come to the party at all ask her what made her come with Lloyd she says "He made me laugh."

Considering the fact that it is a college going crowd movie, it has it's share of fun rave parties, undecided confused teenagers, attractions and break ups. One such case is the character of Corey who is in love with this guy Joe (or rather she thinks she is in) and she has written 65 love songs just for him and makes no qualms to hide it from him. This particular plot about Joe and Corey is funny. This guy is shown to be a retard who is ready to dump his present girlfriend because he wants to have sex with Corey. The conversation goes something like this

Corey: Hi Joe, How are you? I love you.
Joe: I love you too
Corey: You invade my soul
Joe: I want to get back together. Mini is gonna go to college and I'm gonna be alone and I'm gonna break up with her before she leaves, have sex with me.

Again we have the sequence when Diane breaks of with Lloyd and he tries hanging out with other guys. He says to Corey on the phone " I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen, a pen!!"They tell him that they have lot of experience with girls and they are not worth it. He asks:

Lloyd: I got a question. If you guys know so much about woman, how come you're here in like the Gas 'n' Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere.
Joe: By choice, man. :-)

It is not that the movie is different or it has something extraordinary to say but it is the way
the movie is done which leaves a lasting impression in your mind. It has this simple hearted honesty and innocence about it which makes you think back of the days when love was just about love!

Diane likes the company of Lloyd but at the same time she is caught up with the turbulence her father had to go through because of the raids by the RIS. She trusts her father and the film shows a very strong father daughter bond. She tells her father everything which might seem a little improbable under the present circumstances.
Between this father daughter ordeal is set the love story of Lloyd and Diane. The cute part is when Lloyd is asked as to what is he planning to do next he says, "sticking to your daughter" as if that is good enough an occupation! Diane tries to avoid Lloyd on her father's request because Mr. Court thinks that the guy is not worth enough for her daughter but ultimately Lloyd wins and manages to stick around!!

The movie has its own undercurrents of insecurities and socialism. The old age home shown in the late 80s is as relevant in todays' s time as it was then. The obsession with getting the perfect match for one's daughter/son and the definitions we give to success- good job and a secured future still holds true!
